Brighton And Hove Golf Club

19th Century Clubhouse
The majority of the clubhouse is the original building from the 19th century, although in 1996 a modern Pro Shop and changing rooms were added. A feature of the clubhouse is the coal burning stove in the middle of the lounge, which ensures a lovely feeling of warmth in those winter months, often welcomed after a windswept round.

BONSALL UNLUCKY

Director of Golf Phil Bonsall was unlucky to narrowly miss out on a Major Sussex Trophy when he lost in a 5 way play off for the Riseborough Memorial Trophy at Littlehampton on Wednesday 25th August. Phil shot a great round of 67, but was left thinking about an expensive 3 putt on the 16th. "I felt I needed one more birdie" Phil said, "and then I hit a really good shot into 16, but it spun back to about 15 feet. I was aggresive with the putt, and knocked it 4 feet past, but then missed the return. I was disappointed later to realise that a par would have been good enough to win."

In the play off it again came down to putting, 3 of the guys were out of it, and Phil was about 10 feet away, and Jamie Harris a foot closer on exactly the same line. Phil's effort missed on the left lip, and Jamie holed to win.

Better luck next time Phil, whose next event is the Sussex Open in 2 weeks time.

MIXED CUP SUCCESS

Congratulations to our Mixed Cup team who secured a great victory in the final BDGS event of the year. Our team of Peter Ward, Judy McKemey, Mike Davis, Hazel Sheard, Jan Gill, Chris Gill, James Gill, Sandie Steele, Kim Bonsall and Brian Drew beat East Brighton 3 - 2 in the morning to reach the final against the Dyke. In the final our team were magnificent, and on a wet, foggy afternoon they won 5 - 0. Always nice against the Dyke!!

BDGS CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Jamie Chapman who won the Brighton & District Championship for the second year running. His rounds of 70 & 70 for 140 total at West Hove on Sunday 4th July was good enough for a tie with Jonny Ingram from West Hove, and a play off. Jamie had a solid birdie at the first play off hole, only for Jonny to chip in for the half! However at thhe next hole, Jamie made a great par 3 into the wind to beat Jonny who made a 4.

Well played Jamie!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Our new Club Champion is Martin Slumbers after an exciting play off victory over Jamie Chapman. Both players were tied on 140 for 36 holes after Martin had shot 72 & 68, and Jamie had shot 74 & 66, which included a fantastic back 9 of just 30 shots to make the play off.

The play off began on the 1st which was halved in 4 after Martin made a great up and down from the back of the green, and Jamie failed to convert a 15 foot birdie attempt. On the 2nd, both players made birdie fo another half, with Jamie making a great up and down from the front bunker, and Martin narrowly missing an eagle putt.

The 3rd became the deciding hole. Martin hit a great lookng 7 iron, but it bounced hard and went long. Jamie hit an 8iron to about 25 feet left of the pin. Martin chipped down to 10 feet, and Jamie looked favourite. However he was very positive with his putt, and rolled it 6 feet past. Martin holed his putt for a par, which left Jamie needing to hole his to carry on. He hit a good putt but unfortunately it lipped out.

Martin had previously won the Chamionship in 1984 and 1986.

The Rubie Cup for the Handicap Event was won by Austin Blackman with a nett 66 in the morning, and a nett 67 in the afternoon. Austin holed a great 15 foot swinging putt on the 18th to beat Paul Walker, Bo English and Wayne Humphrey by a single shot.
